The government on Friday said it strongly disapproves remarks by the European Union about Hong Kong’s lawful act to pursue people wanted for alleged national security offences.

Police last week issued arrest warrants for 19 people accused of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law by forming or joining an organisation called the "Hong Kong Parliament".

A government spokesman said in a statement that the "Hong Kong Parliament" is an organisation that aims to subvert state power and that “any suggestion that certain individuals or organisations should be immune from legal consequences for their illegal acts... is no different from advocating a special privilege to break the law.”

“The HKSAR Government strongly demands that the EU immediately stop acting against international law and basic norms of international relations and interfering in Hong Kong matters, which are purely China's internal affairs,” the spokesman said.

He added that people should not think they can evade criminal liability by fleeing overseas.

“Ultimately, they will be held liable for their acts constituting serious offences endangering national security and be punished by the law. No country or organisation should harbour criminals nor try to exonerate these people with different excuses," he said.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security in the SAR, while protecting the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents according to the law.
