Authorities on Tuesday worked to drain floodwater from Queen Mary Hospital after serious flooding disrupted accident and emergency services there as heavy downpours pounded the city.

The Hospital Authority earlier said "severe flooding has occurred on some roads" within the hospital in Pok Fu Lam and it had asked the Fire Services Department to take patients to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai instead.

Water was seen flowing downhill along a road heading to Queen Mary Hospital.

Firefighters and staff from the Drainage Services Department were brought in as parts of the hospital were inundated with calf-deep pools of water.

Authorities deployed a pumping machine to drain the water, while sandbags were placed at the entrances of hospital blocks.

At around 11am, the drainage department said the flooding had been cleared up. The Hospital Authority said A&E services at Queen Mary returned to normal at around noon.
