Officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) on Thursday carried out mosquito control measures at Lei Tung Estate in Ap Lei Chau and Mount Haven in Tsing Yi, the two housing estates where three imported cases of chikungunya fever were reported the day before.

Officers were seen spraying mosquito repellent in grassy areas at the estates.

District councillors and community care teams were also distributing mosquito patches and anti-mosquito leaflets to residents near Lei Tung MTR Station.

Some residents of Lei Tung Estate said they were not worried about the imported cases, believing that everyone would take the initiative to implement mosquito prevention measures.

However, other residents voiced concerns about the risk of infection and the potential for an outbreak.

They said they would use mosquito patches and repellent sprays and would reduce the number of times they take their children to parks with a high presence of mosquitoes.

Southern District Councillor Li Ka-ying set up a booth at Lei Tung Estate to remind residents of mosquito prevention.

She said the estate management company and the owners' corporation regularly carry out mosquito control measures, and the electronic mosquito traps within the estate were functioning properly.

"As long as we diligently carry out mosquito prevention measures, such as spraying mosquito repellent, placing more mosquito control agents and implementing additional protective steps, I believe the chance of an outbreak is actually quite low," Li said.

Meanwhile, residents at Mount Haven said the area has always had a significant mosquito presence, but the estate has long-term mosquito prevention measures in place, including regular spraying of mosquito repellent.

They also said they were not worried about the disease spreading as it's not transmitted from person to person.
