President Xi Jinping on Friday called for all-out rescue efforts after flash floods in Gansu province killed at least 10 people and left 33 others missing.
According to CCTV, Xi said the top priority is to exhaust all possible means to search for and rescue those unaccounted for.
The president also urged authorities to relocate residents under threat and minimise the number of casualties.
Flooding triggered by heavy rain has swept through Yuzhong county in Gansu, disrupting power and communications in some areas.
Xi noted that given the recent frequent occurrence of extreme weather, local authorities and relevant departments must strengthen risk forecasting and early warning, identify and rectify hidden hazards, reinforce emergency response and on-call duty arrangements, and enhance flood control and disaster relief work with targeted measures so as to ensure people's safety during the flood season.
