Chief Executive John Lee said Hong Kong would continue to explore emerging markets to expand business opportunities for both local and mainland merchants amid geopolitical tensions.

Posting a video on his Facebook page on Sunday, Lee said Hong Kong acts as a “unique two-way platform” to attract global enterprises while assisting mainland companies to enter overseas markets.

The number of registered local companies reached 1.5 million as of the end of July, with non-local company registration exceeding 15,000, Lee said, adding that both numbers reached a new high.

“In addition to attracting global enterprises, Hong Kong is also a highly valued platform for mainland enterprises to go overseas. We have been actively bringing Hong Kong and mainland businesses to different markets, including the Middle East and Asean countries,” he said.

“In the future, we will continue to work together to source more emerging markets with the potential to expand business opportunities for local and mainland business people and balance investment portfolio needs amid geopolitical challenges.”

Lee also said the SAR would continue to attract quality enterprises to expand their business in the city, boosting local economy and job opportunities.

He added that Hong Kong should offer more creative services and products during economic restructuring.
