A 20-year-old MTR worker died on Friday after a vehicle rolled back and trapped him at the company's depot in Siu Ho Wan on Lantau.

The accident happened at around noon, shortly after the man had finished work and was heading out for lunch.

As he walked behind the engineering vehicle, it rolled backwards and pinned him against a wall.

He suffered injuries to his legs and abdomen, and was rushed unconscious to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he later died.

The employee joined the MTR in September last year.

Cheris Lee, MTR's Chief of Operating and Metro Segment, said the company would conduct a thorough investigation.

“MTR considers safety our top priority. We have strict regulations and procedures in place for work at the depot. We take this accident very seriously and will carry out a detailed investigation into its cause. We express our deepest condolences to the worker’s family and will provide them with all necessary assistance," she said.

The Labour Department said officers were sent to the scene immediately and have also launched an investigation.

"We commenced an immediate on-site investigation as soon as we were notified of the accident and have issued a suspension notice to the employer concerned, suspending the operation of the engineering train," a department spokesman said.

"The employer cannot resume the work process until the [Labour Department] is satisfied that suitable measures to abate the relevant risks have been taken."
