Classes for all AM and whole-day schools have been suspended for Monday, as the territory was lashed by heavy rain early in the morning.
The Education Bureau issued a statement at 5.30am announcing the suspension, as the Red Rain Warning Signal still still in effect at the time.
It added that schools should implement contingency plans and arrange staff to look after any students who might arrive and ensure that conditions are safe before allowing them to return home.
However, classes of PM schools should proceed as usual as the Hong Kong Observatory then downgraded the warning to an amber signal at 6.05am, before cancelling all rainstorm signals at 7.20am.
The red warning was issued at 1.15am, 45 minutes after the observatory first put up the amber alert, as a band of intense thundery showers affected the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.
The observatory said the islands district and Tuen Mun received more than 100mm of rainfall on Monday morning, while many other places in the territory recorded more than 60mm of rain.
