A man died after a fire broke out in a building on King's Road in North Point on Saturday.

The blaze started at around 4pm in a subdivided flat on the 14th floor of Mido Apartments, with the fire area measuring approximately 15 by 10 metres, officials said.

The man, believed to be in his 60s, suffered burns and was pronounced dead at Ruttonjee Hospital.

A 17-year-old girl was taken to hospital in a conscious state after inhaling smoke. Five other people suffered minor injuries but did not need to go to hospital.

Firefighters said they helped a total of seven people to safety, while 75 others fled the building by themselves.

The Fire Services Department (FSD) deployed 98 firefighters and ambulance personnel, along with a breathing apparatus team and one water jet, extinguishing the fire in less than an hour.

“The flat that caught fire was divided into eight subdivided units. The corridors are quite narrow. We are still investigating the cause of the fire,” said Assistant Divisional Officer Li Leong Kiu.

He added that the building's fire safety devices were working normally and none of the escape routes were obstructed.
