Two doctors from Tseung Kwan O Hospital have been arrested for allegedly accessing and leaking patients’ information – including their addresses and phone numbers – without authorisation.
Police said the doctors, aged 35 and 57, were arrested on suspicion of accessing a computer with criminal or dishonest intent on Sunday.
The two consultants have since been held for investigation.
In a media briefing on Monday, the hospital's chief executive Kenny Yuen said the associate consultant has been temporarily suspended while the consultant resigned during the hospital’s internal investigation.
“In mid-August, we received an internal complaint that some patients' confidential information was leaked to the media,” he said.
“If any colleague dishonestly or inappropriately uses patient information for any purpose without authorisation, the Hospital Authority will deal with that seriously.”
When asked if he believes the leakage is related to a previous surgery that resulted in a patient's death, Yuen said that after a rigorous medical expert examination, it is believed the patient died due to complications, and the case has been referred to the Coroner's Court.
He said the hospital has not received any related complaints through official channels, stressing that any suspected medical misconduct should be reported to the Hospital Authority through an established and lawful reporting mechanism.
