President Xi Jinping on Wednesday hosted a reception at the Great Hall of the People, welcoming guests from around the world to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and Macau Chief Executive Sam Hou-fai were among the attendees.

Earlier in the morning, a grand military parade was held.

Xi said the event aimed to remember history, honour fallen heroes, uphold peace, and create a better future.

Xi noted that humanity shares the same planet and should live in harmony, not return to the law of the jungle.

He said countries must stay committed to peaceful development and work together to build a shared future for humankind.

He stressed that China’s modernisation follows a path of peaceful development and that China will always be a force for peace, stability, and progress.

The president added that China hopes all nations can learn from history, value harmony, and push forward global modernisation to create a better future for humanity.

"History warns us that the belief in justice cannot be shaken. The aspiration for peace cannot be blocked. The strength of the people cannot be defeated," he said.
