A senior member of a leading national think tank on Wednesday said the most important message of the military parade in Beijing is China’s desire for peace.
Lau Siu-kai, a consultant to the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies, attended the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Speaking to RTHK, Lau said that in today’s chaotic world, peace and security are more important than ever.
He said China needs strong military power to safeguard its own security while also using its strength to protect global peace.
He noted that by showcasing advanced weapons, China was demonstrating that it has risen as a military power.
But he stressed China has no intention of pursuing hegemony or bullying other nations. Instead, he said the display was a warning to countries, especially the United States, not to underestimate China.
Lau also pointed to the participation of more than 20 world leaders in the commemorations.
He said this shows that many countries in the Global South hope to see China balance against US unilateralism and bullying.
He said China defines itself as part of the Global South and can take on a leadership role, helping those nations secure greater benefits on the international stage and countering the influence of the West.
He added that China’s development initiatives and calls for reform in global governance match the interests and demands of these countries.
