Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau on Wednesday said the Belt and Road Initiative serves as a readily available platform for international cooperation in times of uncertainty.
Chairing a policy dialogue at the annual Belt and Road Summit at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, Yau said there is always a silver lining despite challenges brought about by geopolitical tensions and financial volatility.
"The rapid evolution of technology, global consensus to a greener environment, and the emergence of new forums of economic integration are creating unprecedented avenues for growth," Yau said.
"For instance, green economy demands innovation and a more sustainable way of production. Digitalisation offers superior tools in transforming production, servicing logistic operations. We all need a fast and collective response, and to prioritise cooperation over competition."
The minister said the initiative allows ongoing trade and economic integration due to its emphasis on infrastructure development.
He added that more jobs have been created, which has led to improvements in living standards. Enterprises can also reach new customers, with enhanced market access and reduce trade barriers, Yau said.
