The Observatory has warned of potential bad weather in the coming week with the possible arrival of tropical cyclone Ragasa, which is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon.
The storm will move towards the vicinity of Luzon Strait and intensify significantly in the next couple of days, the weather forecaster said on Saturday.
"It may edge closer to the coast of Guangdong with super typhoon intensity midweek," it said.
"According to the present forecast, local weather will deteriorate gradually on Tuesday and Wednesday. Gale to storm force winds will prevail on Wednesday."
The forecaster said the storm is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to Hong Kong.
"Under the influence of significant storm surge, the sea level over coastal areas by then may be similar to that of Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018," it said.
The warning came after the Observatory cancelled all typhoon signals in the morning as tropical depression Mitag moved further away from the city.
Some airlines have cottoned on to the potential chaos posed by Ragasa, with Cathay Pacific saying it will waive rebooking and rerouting charges for flights departing from or arriving in Hong Kong between Tuesday and Thursday.
Greater Bay Airlines too announced that passengers departing between Tuesday and Thursday could rebook their flights within seven days from the original departure dates. Those who are flying on Wednesday can also request a refund within 14 days. The airline will waive all the associated fees.
Hong Kong Airlines also expects flight delays or cancellations from Tuesday to Thursday and will waive rebooking and rerouting fees for services hit by the storm.
