The Education Bureau will make an announcement on Monday regarding school arrangements for the following day as super typhoon Ragasa is expected to pose a serious threat to Hong Kong.
The announcement was made as Chief Secretary Eric Chan chaired a meeting of the steering committee on handling extreme weather on Sunday, when he coordinated government departments to get ready for the storm.
Officials have advised the public to take immediate precautionary measures, especially for residents and merchants in low-lying regions.
People are urged to stay away from river sides and slopes and stop engaging in water sports.
Officials also called on people living in squatter houses or roof-top structures to consider taking refuge at government shelters, while drivers should park their cars indoors.
Various government departments are also preparing for emergencies, flooding, landslides and tree collapses under the extreme weather.
Meanwhile, the Observatory said it will raise the Standby Signal No 1 at around noon on Monday, warning that super typhoon Ragasa will continue to intensify in the next few days.
The forecaster said the weather will get worse on Tuesday before gale or storm force winds on Wednesday.
It had said that Ragasa is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to Hong Kong, and a storm surge that may be similar to that of Mangkhut in 2018.
