Residents and shopkeepers in Lei Yue Mun, one of Hong Kong’s flooding black spots, on Sunday were bracing for the approaching super typhoon, with many expressing deep concern about its impact.

The owner of a cha chaan teng said she would move refrigerators and food supplies to prevent flood damage. However, she said she would would remain in the shop to deal with potential emergencies.

“I'm so worried about the storm that I hadn’t slept for two nights, constantly thinking of how best to prepare," she said.

A fruit shop operator said even though she plans to use up to 40 sandbags to prevent floodwater from entering her store, she still expects her refrigerators and other equipment to be damaged.

“I will also put up plastic boards at the entrance to stop water from flooding into my shop. I’ll do everything I can,” she said.

Meanwhile, one resident said he had already bought extra groceries to last two days.

The Drainage Services Department has been handing out sandbags to residents and businesses in the area, and many shops have already put them to use.

The Observatory warned that storm surges could push coastal sea levels to heights similar to those seen during Typhoon Hato in 2017 and Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018.

Mangkhut caused serious flooding in Lei Yue Mun, where many residents were evacuated.
