The MTR Corporation said on Monday it has stepped up inspection of flood-prevention equipment and drainage systems across its network ahead of the imminent significant impact expected to be posed by Super Typhoon Ragasa to the city in the coming days.
The rail giant also implemented wind-proof and flood-prevention measures in housing estates and shopping malls under its management.
In low-lying Heng Fa Chuen, a flood-prone coastal neighbourhood on Hong Kong Island, 28 residential blocks closest to the shoreline have been fitted with floodgates and temporary pumping facilities inside their lobbies.
Vehicles in the underground car parks of those buildings will also be temporarily relocated elsewhere, away from the shoreline.
The MTRC also said railway services would remain largely normal when the No. 8 signal is in effect – while MTR bus services would be suspended three hours after the No. 8 signal had been raised.
Open sections of the railway network, including along the Airport Express route, parts of the East Rail and Tuen Ma lines, as well as light rail, will be suspended when the No. 9 signal or higher is issued.
If conditions are safe for doing so, trains already running on open sections when the No. 9 signal is issued will be rerouted to their scheduled terminus or safe locations, such as stations with shopping mall connections.
