The observatory issued the No. 8 Northwest Gale or Storm Signal on Tuesday afternoon.

The forecaster says winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected.

It urged the public to complete all precautions as soon as possible, and stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

The forecaster said on its Facebook page that the storm is expected to come closest to the Pearl River Estuary on Wednesday morning before making landfall west of Hong Kong.

The storm is forecast to make landfall west of the city.

"When a tropical cyclone passes south of Hong Kong and makes landfall to the west, Hong Kong will come under the influence of east-to-southeast winds. Since these winds blow directly in from the sea without encountering any terrain, they will not weaken significantly. The winds will also push seawater toward the shore, causing storm surges,” the observatory said.

The Observatory added that local weather will deteriorate rapidly later on Tuesday, with strong winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to persist into Wednesday. The public is urged to stay away from the shore, avoid water activities and take early precautions against flooding and strong winds.
