Surging seawater crashed through the glass doors of a seaside hotel in Ocean Park and swept through the lobby as Super Typhoon Ragasa battered Hong Kong, videos circulating on social media showed.
Online footage shared on Wednesday showed water gushing through the doors of the Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel, shattering the glass and knocking down at least one person inside though a life-size cutout of a panda remained standing.
People who were wading through the calf-deep water exclaimed “so strong”, while another person repeatedly shouted: “get out”.
The hotel said a member of staff lost balance and fell over as the water flooded the area.
It added that no injuries were reported during the storm, and that it has deployed additional workers to deal with the typhoon aftermath and to ensure that guests are safe and comfortable.
In a video filmed later in the morning, hotel staff were seen mopping up muddy water from the floor, which was covered with shattered glass, plant pots and other debris.
The Drainage Services Department confirmed that the incident was among one of around a dozen floods caused by the super typhoon, adding that water levels along the city’s coast had risen significantly.
