Repair and recovery works for areas in Tseung Kwan O badly littered with heavy debris and fallen trees as a result of Super Typhoon Ragasa could take up to a month, according to Sai Kung district councillor Christine Fong.

The storm's fury was evident across the city, with the Drainage Services Department receiving multiple reports of flooding. Tseung Kwan O was among one of the most badly affected areas.

Fong said water levels along the promenade rose up to four metres, causing widespread flooding in nearby parks and and pedestrian walkways. She also noted that over 20 restaurants along the waterfront were damaged.

"The [government] had placed sandbags along the Tseung Kwan O waterfront before the storm, but since the rising seawater caused waves to surge onto the pedestrian walkway... some of the bars and restaurants along the promenade were also damaged," she explained

The damage extended beyond the coastline, with nearby schools suffering losses and some apartments in the area reporting shattered windows. Fong also said fallen trees had damaged many village houses.

She urged the authorities to clear fallen trees as soon as possible, and improve the local drainage system in the longer run.

Separately, police received a report at around 7am that a container, which had been converted into an office at a construction site in Tseung Kwan O, had been blown into the sea.

Officers conducted a search and rescue operation, and confirmed that no one was trapped or injured in the incident.
