No passenger flights will be taking off from the airport before midnight officials said on Wednesday, while some airlines said it will be more like 6am on Thursday when services start to resume following Super Typhoon Ragasa.

Chris Au Young, General Manager of Terminal and Passenger Experience at the Airport Authority, said while the airport remains open, it is still being affected by strong winds and crosswinds.

"Due to safety considerations of the airlines, there are no passenger flights operating [on Wednesday]. As for the next day or two, we anticipate it will take about two days to recover," he said.

"Up to now, since [Tuesday] 6pm, approximately 1,000 flights have been affected. Therefore, we expect to gradually return to normal operations within the next two days."

Cathay Pacific said it expects to resume flights at 6am on Thursday.

Its budget subsidiary, HK Express, will have 13 flights arriving between midnight and 6am, with 12 flights scheduled to depart before 8am, including a 6.35am service to the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Greater Bay Airlines confirmed the cancellation of all Wednesday flights, with operations resuming on Thursday morning.

Hong Kong Airlines said it will have 70 flights on Thursday, beginning with an 8.30am departure to Sydney.

The authority estimates that the storm disruption has affected approximately 140,000 passengers over the past two days.

It added that it handed out basic supplies such as towels, food and water to people at the airport, along with toys and colouring pens for children.
