The DAB on Friday called on the government to install more automated systems in car parks to support high demand.
Lawmaker Vincent Cheng said the pilot smart parking system – operating in Sham Shui Po, Yau Ma Tei, Tsuen Wan and Tai Po – has worked well for residents and car park operators.
He suggested the system be implemented in more short-tenancy car parks.
"According to the operators of a car park, their system is nearly fully utilised and drivers are getting used to this smart parking system."
"Drivers feel safe and secure using this system and some chose to use this parking system instead of parking on the streets."
"The government should review the smart parking system to see whether we can have more smart system car parks in the coming few years to ensure there are enough parking spaces," Cheng said.
With the implementation of higher metered parking fees, Cheng said the practice of using parking spaces for the whole day by individuals or businesses could be reduced.
"The public parking fee before was not that expensive and some people tried to use that space for a very long time for business [purposes]," he said.
"By increasing the fee, I think this is a way to make sure public parking spaces can be more useful for [everyone]."
Alongside the installation of smart parking systems and the rise in the metered parking fee, the government should, the party also suggested, actively put vacant sites to use as short-tenancy car parks.
