The Observatory says it will assess the need for higher tropical cyclone warning signals tonight, after it issues the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 12.20 pm on Saturday.

It issued the Standby Signal No.1 at 7.40 pm on Friday.

The forecaster said severe tropical storm Matmo is moving steadily across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea, and that local winds are expected to strengthen gradually later on Saturday.

It said any decision to issue a higher signal would depend on Matmo's intensity, the proximity of its gale-force winds to the Pearl River Estuary, and changes in local wind conditions.

The Education Bureau has said kindergarten classes, schools for children with physical disability, and schools for children with intellectual disability are suspended on Saturday afternoon.
