A 54-year-old man has been arrested and 60 kilogrammes of suspected methamphetamine with an estimated street value of HK$20 million seized in an anti-drug operation in Tuen Mun.

The operation unfolded on Friday night with police officers intercepting the suspect outside an industrial unit. Upon inspection, they found 15 one-kilogramme packages of the drug in a nylon bag that he was carrying.

A subsequent search of a suspected drug storage facility under the man's control led to the discovery of an additional 45 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, packaged in identical one-kilogramme units.

"Preliminary investigations suggest that some individuals were lured by financial incentives from a drug trafficking syndicate into taking on roles as warehouse managers and delivery personnel for the drugs," said Chan Lik-ho, a senior inspector from the narcotics bureau.

"This operation successfully prevented a large quantity of drugs from entering the market.

"Additionally, we noted that, unlike previous cases where private cars and light goods vehicles were commonly used for drug trafficking, this syndicate attempted to use nylon bags in conjunction with construction vehicles to conceal the drug transfers between locations with the aim of making investigations difficult and evading law enforcement."

Police said the suspect faces two charges of trafficking in dangerous drugs and is scheduled to appear at the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts on Monday.
