Hamas said on Saturday that the Palestinian Islamist group was ready to start talks to resolve all outstanding issues under US President Donald Trump's Gaza ceasefire deal.

"We are ready to begin negotiations immediately to finalise all issues," a senior Hamas official said on condition of anonymity.

The group said on Friday that it was ready to release all hostages held in the Gaza Strip but did not address calls for its disarmament and its exile from the Palestinian territory after the war's end.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas that took part in the October 7, 2023, attack that sparked the Israeli bombardment endorsed on Saturday the group's response to the US plan.

Islamic Jihad's approval of the plan could help facilitate the release of hostages held by both groups in Gaza.

However, despite calls by Trump for an immediate end to the bombing after Hamas had signalled its readiness to release the hostages, Gaza's civil defence agency said on Saturday Israel carried out dozens of attacks on Gaza City.

Also, the families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza on Saturday said it was "essential" to end the Gaza war immediately.

"President Trump's demand to stop the war immediately is essential to prevent serious and irreversible harm to the hostages," the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said. "We call on Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu to immediately begin efficient and swift negotiations to bring all our hostages home."

Israel's refusal to heed Trump and the hostage families' call seems to have been borne out in the issuance of a warning by its military's Arabic spokesman to residents of Gaza city, saying it remained a "dangerous" combat zone, urging them not to go north or near areas where the military operates.

Axios earlier reported that the Israeli military will shift to defensive operations in Gaza and halt its plan to seize Gaza City.

"It was a very violent night, during which the [Israeli army] carried out dozens of air strikes and artillery shelling on Gaza City and other areas in the Strip, despite President Trump's call to halt the bombing," civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said in Gaza City.

Bassal, whose agency is a rescue force which operates under Hamas authority, added that 20 homes were destroyed in the overnight bombardments.

"The situation is very serious in Gaza City," Bassal said, adding that his teams were not able to reach all the casualties due to the "presence of tanks and the ongoing bombardment".

Gaza City's Baptist Hospital said in a statement that it received casualties from a strike on a home in Tuffah neighbourhood, including four dead and "several wounded".

Nasser Hospital in south Gaza's Khan Yunis said two children were killed and eight people wounded in a drone strike on a tent in camp for displaced Gazans.

The peace plan for Gaza, presented by Trump this week and backed by Netanyahu, calls for a ceasefire, the release of hostages within 72 hours, Hamas's disarmament and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. (Agencies)
