The Observatory downgraded the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 to the Standby Signal No. 1 at 3.40pm on Sunday, as Typhoon Matmo moved further away from the city.
The No. 3 signal had been in effect for over 24 hours.
According to the Observatory, Matmo made landfall near Zhanjiang in Guangdong province and is continuing to move inland, causing local winds to gradually weaken.
"When Matmo no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals," the forecaster said.
Despite the downgrade, the Observatory has advised the public to remain cautious. Seas are still rough with swells, and people are strongly advised to stay away from the shoreline and avoid engaging in water sports.
