More than 1.4 million mainland visitors set foot in Hong Kong during the National Day Golden Week holiday, the government revealed on Thursday, describing tourist numbers as "satisfactory".

They accounted for around 85 percent of the 1.64 million arrivals recorded over the eight-day period that ended on Wednesday.

Officials said in a statement that visitor numbers were "at a satisfactory level, with bustling crowds and a lively atmosphere in the city, which has boosted business across various industries".

October 1 saw the most mainland tourists coming to Hong Kong, with over 230,000 arrivals.

The National Day fireworks display drew over 340,000 spectators, while the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance attracted more than 100,000 people.

An eight-day Mid-Autumn Festival lantern carnival at Victoria Park also saw more than 380,000 visitors.

As for the High Island Reservoir East Dam, the government said about 12,100 visitors were there during the Golden Week period.

Chief Secretary Eric Chan said he is delighted to see people enjoying the festive events and National Day offers, adding that there's been a boost in spending among both local residents and visitors.
