Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said authorities are exploring the possibility of launching new water taxi routes in Hong Kong in an attempt to further promote waterborne transport and showcase the city's iconic harbour.
Writing in her blog on Saturday, Chan said she received positive feedback from visitors during the National Day Golden Week holiday, who praised the city's extensive and efficient public transport system.
She highlighted the water taxi service as a "perfect way" for both residents and tourists to truly experience the beauty of Victoria Harbour.
To build on this, she said, the Transport Department is encouraging operators to introduce new elements and services.
"Pet-friendly services will be launched on all routes, encouraging both locals and tourists to bring their furry companions along for the ride," Chan said.
"A new short-haul route connecting West Kowloon Cultural District with Central, two places with major landmarks, is expected to begin trial operations by the end of the year."
Chan also said several developments are already underway, including a trial service for a Tsim Sha Tsui-Lei Yue Mun (via Tsim Sha Tsui East) route that began this month.
The service will operate on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays until October 4 next year, providing access to new scenic spots.
Chan said service enhancements had also been made for the Tsim Sha Tsui East-Central (via Wan Chai) service, which has seen daily trips increased from seven to 10 and the introduction of luxury sightseeing boat options.
