A tourism sector representative on Thursday suggested the government allow more vehicles from Guangdong into Hong Kong on certain days under a scheme that is set to start next month.
Timothy Chui, executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Association, welcomed the southbound travel for Guangdong vehicles scheme, saying various sectors, such as hotel and catering, are hoping the arrangement will boost business.
The scheme will start with a daily quota of 100 vehicles, for stays of up to three days.
Chui said he hopes more vehicles will be allowed into the SAR when the scheme is found to be running smoothly.
"Traffic in Hong Kong tends to flow pretty smoothly on Saturdays and Sundays, as local drivers head to the mainland," he told RTHK.
"If the scheme operates well, I think the government should consider increasing the vehicle quota during long holidays and weekends in the long term."
He said that some hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui are already planning discounts for visitors using the scheme, and some have already installed charging facilities that conform to mainland standards.
Chan Siu-hung, chairman of Legco's transport panel, said on the same RTHK programme that while he finds the quota to be small, it is sufficient to test whether the city has sufficient parking spots, car chargers, and if there will be too many travellers in one place at a time.
This will allow the government to review the scheme as it progresses, he added.
