Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said Turkish authorities have promised to support and cooperate in the investigation into a deadly cargo plane crash in Hong Kong on Monday.

The incident involved an Emirates cargo plane from Dubai which veered off the runway before crashing into a security patrol vehicle and pushing it into the sea, killing two staff members on board.

The aircraft was operated by Turkish freight carrier ACT Airlines on behalf of Emirates.

The transport minister said four crew members of the cargo plane have remained in Hong Kong to assist with the investigation, and she has met with Turkish officials to discuss further cooperation.

Chan said Turkish authorities have pledged to fully support the investigation and help Hong Kong communicate with the involved crew members and airline, and will also send experts to the SAR to assist with the probe.

The US National Transportation Safety Board will also send investigators to the SAR to support the probe into the case.

Fay Siu, who heads the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, said the government should confiscate the crew members’ travel documents until the investigation is complete.

“In some situations, if the accused have not had their travel documents confiscated, they may leave Hong Kong, making it impossible for the government to process with the prosecution,” she said.

“This allows those who violate the law to escape, which is very unfair to the family and does not let us see justice.” (Additional reporting by Reuters)
