Health officials on Monday reported a new local chikungunya fever case, bringing the tally to three in nine days.

The patient, 45, lives in Mount Haven in Tsing Yi, where two previous patients deemed imported cases also reside in. He works in Sheung Wan.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said the man is chronically ill, and developed chills, joint pain and rash recently.

He went to see a private doctor on Saturday, and was subsequently admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital.

The head of the CHP’s Communicable Disease Branch, Albert Au, said the patient had no recent travel history, but had been to Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan and Kwai Chung Plaza, where previous imported cases had also visited.

He noted this patient was different from the other two local cases, where the patients mostly stayed in their neighbourhood in Wong Tai Sin.

"As far as we understand, [the patient] went to different places other than his home - so we are unsure right now where he got infected," Au told reporters.

"As for this housing complex [Mount Haven], we know there were previous imported cases, but there's a distance between those blocks and where the new patient lives in - so we believe they may not be related."

Au said the centre will conduct whole genome sequencing to find out more about the latest case, adding that authorities will continue to step up mosquito eradication work.
