The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been named the best university in Asia in the latest QS University Rankings, standing out among over 1,500 institutions on the continent.
Peking University has secured second place, while Singapore's Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore share the third spot.
Professor Zhang Xiang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, said that being recognised as the top university in Asia is both a privilege and a responsibility. He emphasised that this reaffirms the university's commitment to academic excellence, global engagement and contributing to the future of this dynamic region.
"Asia’s rise as a nexus of knowledge demands universities that are locally grounded yet globally minded. Through partnerships across the region and beyond, HKU fosters intellectual exchange, cultivates talent, and addresses pressing global challenges. Together, we will continue to push boundaries – not for rankings, but for meaningful impact," he said.
The rankings show Hong Kong is home to five of Asia's top 10 universities, more than any other location.

City University has risen from 10th place to share the 7th spot with Chinese University (CUHK), which dropped one place.
Two other Hong Kong universities have entered the top tier for the first time: the University of Science and Technology climbed from 11th to 6th place, and Polytechnic University rose from 17th to 10th.

In response, CUHK noted that its overall score has increased, reflecting the growing recognition of the university within the field of higher education. It added that regardless of its rankings in various lists, it will continue to prioritise conducting excellent research, education and innovation.

Education University, ranked 152nd, said that improving 60 places from last year highlights its significant progress across various indicators, reflecting a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and international engagement.
Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, noted that Hong Kong has established itself as a prominent international study destination. He added that the strong results reflect the city's outstanding reputation among academics and global employers.
