A worker in her 40s died on Wednesday after she was apparently hit by a falling wall while a village house was being demolished in Yuen Long.

Police said around 11am, a brick wall of about two metres tall and eight metres long in Shan Pui Tsuen collapsed, hitting the woman.

She was trapped in the debris and unconscious when firefighters pulled her out.

The woman was declared dead at Pok Oi Hospital.

The Labour Department (LD) said it's highly concerned about the case, and suspended work involving the contractor in question.

"We commenced an immediate on-site investigation as soon as we were notified of the accident and have issued a suspension notice to the contractor concerned, suspending the demolition work,” a spokesman said.

“The contractor cannot resume the work process until the LD is satisfied that suitable measures to abate the relevant risks have been taken."

Officials also reminded employers to take suitable safety measures, including providing support to the structures being demolished to prevent accidental collapses, as well as fencing off the work areas with warning notices to prevent unauthorised entry.
