The Observatory said it would issue the Standby Signal No. 1 after 12pm on Monday as Fung-wong comes within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong.
According to the forecast track, Fung-wong will be closest to Hong Kong on Wednesday, skirting about 400 kilometres east of the SAR.
Local winds will strengthen later on Tuesday to Wednesday, the Observatory said, adding it would assess the need of a higher tropical cyclone warning signal on Tuesday.
The forecaster added it would be windy and slightly cooler with swells along the coast of Guangdong in the coming few days under the combined effect of Fung-wong and the northeast monsoon.
Temperatures in the urban areas will fall to around 20 degrees in middle of the week, it said.
The Observatory also warned that minor flooding might occur along some coastal low-lying areas overnight on Monday, appealing to the public to pay attention to the latest weather information.
