The observatory on Tuesday said Typhoon Fung-wong is unlikely to bring persistently strong winds to Hong Kong as it moves north towards Taiwan, and it’s unlikely that a higher signal will be issued.
While the forecaster said Fung-wong will bring occasionally strong northerly winds offshore on Tuesday, reaching gale force on high ground, “due to terrain sheltering effect, the chance of having persistent strong winds generally over the territory is relatively low.”
As such, it said Standby Signal No 1 will remain in force during the day on Tuesday.
Fung-wong is expected remain at least 400 kilometres away from Hong Kong at its closest point, which it is expected to reach later on Tuesday or early on Wednesday.
“Unless Fung-wong adopts a track closer to the coast of Guangdong, the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is relatively low”, the observatory said.
As the storm leaves the area, the observatory said the T1 signal may be replaced by the Strong Monsoon Signal, or cancelled altogether.
