Hong Kong’s fencing team celebrated its second medal of the day at the National Games, as Aaron Ho secured a silver medal in the men’s individual sabre on Saturday.

This medal marks the city's best-ever performance in the event at these Games.

The 30-year-old put on a resilient display throughout the competition, defeating a series of opponents including his teammate Royce Chan, as well as Wu Jiasheng of Anhui, Shandong's Xu Haojun and Xu Yingming of Guangdong.

In the gold medal match, Ho, who is ranked 79 in the world, faced a formidable challenge from Shandong’s Wei Zhenhao.

Wei employed a well-calculated strategy, focusing on defence and counter-attacks rather than rushing forward.

This approach proved highly effective, allowing him to build a commanding 8-1 lead by the first break.

After the interval, Ho adjusted his tactics and mounted a renewed offensive, and slightly closed the gap.

However, Wei remained composed and steady, maintaining his lead to ultimately seal the victory with a score of 15-7.

Ho said he was aiming to win the SAR's first fencing gold at the National Games.

"I'm actually a bit upset that I couldn't win a gold medal. I feel a bit sorry because my head coach always talks about wanting us to achieve a breakthrough at the National Games and win our first fencing gold medal," he said.

"But unfortunately, I didn't perform well in the final and couldn't win that gold medal.

"But I know that in the upcoming days, our Hong Kong team will have many athletes who have worked very hard to prepare for this competition, and I hope they will be successful too."

The podium was completed by Wei's teammate, Zhu Peijie, who took the bronze.

Ho's silver-medal win comes on the same day his teammate Kaylin Hsieh won bronze in the women's individual epee, highlighting a strong start for the city’s fencing contingent at the Games.
