China's ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, on Monday said the pressing priority following the Busan summit between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump is to ensure solid steps will be taken to follow up on the consensus reached between the two leaders as early as possible.

"The Busan Summit is not the finish line, but a new starting point," Xie was speaking via a video speech at the 6th US-China Hong Kong Forum.

Xie said the two presidents navigated the giant ship of China-US relations through "rough waters and hidden rocks", although ties between the two countries witnessed ups and downs this year in particular setbacks in economic and trade at one point.

"China always keeps its words. We hope the US side will work with us in the same direction and take concrete actions, so as to reassure both our peoples and the international community," he said.

Going forward, he said no matter how the situation may evolve, the historical trend of win-win cooperation between China and the US will not change.

"We have a thousand reasons to make the China-US relationship a success, and no single reason to mess it up."

He added there is vast room for the two countries to cooperate in areas such as green development, artificial intelligence, digital economy, health, tourism and agriculture as China embarks on a new journey in its next five-year plan.
