Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak on Saturday said officials would provide direct support to owners' corporations worried about delays or incomplete repairs following a new safety directive.

The government issued on Wednesday an order for all mesh netting covering buildings undergoing major renovations across Hong Kong to be removed by Saturday as part of an effort to address public safety concerns in the aftermath of the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire.

Speaking after an RTHK radio programme, Mak acknowledged the abrupt order had left some owners anxious about the status of repair works at their buildings, particularly if their projects involved consultants or contractors linked to the fire.

"We understand that many owners are anxious about whether this will affect ongoing major repair works at their estates," she said.

"Therefore, we, alongside the Development Bureau, have announced that we will reach out to these different owners' corporations through district councillors in all 18 districts."

Mak said the bureau would co-ordinate with professional bodies, including the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, to provide support.

"For instance, if owners' corporations need to select a new consulting or engineering firm, we will assist them with the procedures and requirements," she said.

"We have also reminded all property management companies in Hong Kong that they must fulfil their responsibilities to assist the owners' corporations."

Mak also reported that public donations to a fund established for victims of the blaze had reached HK$3 billion.

The funding will be used to launch various schemes to address different needs, including medium-term as well as long-term housing solutions.
