Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Sunday said Hong Kong must have responsible and capable lawmakers to ensure Hong Kong’s sustainable development, after casting his own ballot at the Wong Chuk Hang Sports Centre.

Speaking to the media afterwards, Chan said the community had been united in their response to the recent “heartless” fire in Tai Po, which also reflected strong demands for comprehensive reforms of relevant systems.

He said the reconstruction efforts in Tai Po, as well as systemic reforms, need the support of a united community – as well as a new batch of legislators.

“These reforms must have the support and cooperation from the Legislative Council. Comprehensive reforms can be accelerated if the executive and legislative branches join forces and have constructive interactions,” he said.

“We need representatives who are responsible, capable, and have vision to enter Legco to push forward sustained economic and social development in Hong Kong and improve people’s livelihoods, together with the government,” Chan added.

The finance chief urged voters to cast their ballots.
