National security police on Monday welcomed the court judgement on Jimmy Lai in which the former media tycoon was found guilty of three national security-related charges.

Speaking outside West Kowloon court where the ruling was delivered, chief superintendent Steve Li said officers had gone through an enormous amount of evidence and documents in their investigation.

"The proceeding involved the examination of the 2,220 exhibits and the trial bundle used in the court is over 80,000 pages. There are 14 prosecution witnesses, including five accomplices and one immunity witness, who testified at the court. The figures demonstrated the extensive scale and the thoroughness of both the investigation and the judicial process," he said.

Li also said it was noteworthy that throughout the trial, the judiciary had arranged for more than 400 public seats daily, facilitating the attendance of the members of the public and the representatives of the local, international and online media.

"Such arrangements ensure the openness and transparency of the proceedings and enable the public to observe the judicial process in court or through the media coverage with no element of concealment," he said.

When asked if he was worried that the verdict will draw further international sanctions, particularly from US President Donald Trump, Li said "all of us are not afraid of the sanctions because we are the ones to safeguard the rule of law in Hong Kong."
