Police have arrested a man in connection with a daytime robbery in which one billion yen, or approximately HK$50 million, was allegedly stolen outside a bank in Sheung Wan.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning when two employees of a currency exchange shop, aged 39 and 51, were outside an HSBC bank branch at Grand Millennium Plaza.

Sources say each was carrying two suitcases filled with Japanese yen.

As they exited their vehicle, they were ambushed by three individuals, two of whom were armed with knives.

The assailants seized the four suitcases, boarded a private car and fled towards Bonham Strand.

Police received a report from one of the victims around 9am.

Following an investigation, officers arrested a 43-year-old man from the mainland outside Sheung Wan Station.

He was in possession of a suitcase containing a large quantity of yen, believed to be linked to the robbery.

The suspect was holding a two-way exit permit at the time of his arrest.

It is understood the victims work for a currency exchange shop on Wing Lok Street.

The yen, according to sources, was owned by a separate individual engaged in foreign trade.
