Some 11.5 million travellers are expected to enter and leave Hong Kong during the upcoming festive period, with more than 9.6 million people expected to go to or arrive from Shenzhen.
The Immigration Department said on Tuesday it expected the outbound and inbound travel peaks to be on Christmas Day on Thursday and Sunday, when around 690,000 travellers are forecast to cross land border points.
It added that SAR officials have discussed the extension of opening hours for some border checkpoints on New Year's Eve with their Shenzhen counterparts.
"The mainland port authorities have duly reported to the national port authorities for approval according to the required procedures. Further details will be announced as soon as possible," the department said in a statement.
It added that border points that open throughout the day, namely the ones for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Huanggang, will remain open as usual.
Meanwhile, police said crowd control measures for Christmas Eve will be implemented from Wednesday afternoon near Lan Kwai Fong in Central, and that roads will be closed in phases.
Officers added there may also be temporary road closures and diversions in Tsim Sha Tsui for the sake of crowd management.
