China on Wednesday denounced US tariffs on semiconductors, saying that "holds back Chinese industries groundlessly".

The comment was in response to the Trump administration's announcement that it will slap tariffs on Chinese semiconductor imports from 2027.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a regular briefing that Beijing opposed the "indiscriminate use of tariffs" and "unreasonable suppression" of Chinese industries by Washington.

Lin said the US measures disrupt the stability of global industrial and supply chains, impede the development of semiconductor industries in various countries, and harm others as well as itself.

"We urge the US to promptly correct its wrong practices, take the important consensus reached by the two heads of state as guidance, and, on the basis of equality, mutual respect and reciprocity, address respective concerns through dialogue to properly manage differences, and safeguard the healthy and sustainable development of China-US relations," he said.

"If the US insists, China will resolutely take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests."

The Commerce Ministry also said it firmly opposed what it called erroneous actions by the US, and urged Washington to immediately revoke the measures.

The Trump administration said it will slap tariffs on Chinese semiconductor imports over Beijing's "unreasonable" pursuit of chip industry dominance.

The White House also said it will wait until June 2027 to impose the tariffs, with the rate announced at least 30 days in advance. (Agencies)
