A government-led mentorship initiative for secondary students from low-income families has seen strong participation, with nearly 4,000 youths taking part in its latest phase, according to Chief Secretary Eric Chan.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the third cohort of the Strive and Rise Programme, Chan praised the collaborative efforts of the government, businesses and the community in driving the programme’s success.

Chan said through a variety of activities, students were able to explore their interests and develop their strengths.

He noted that one of the most popular experiences among participants has been mainland study tours.

"The number of these tours has grown significantly, from just five in the first phase to 35 in the third," he said.

“Students have travelled widely across the country, not only within the Greater Bay Area but to cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Ningxia, Sichuan, Xi’an and Wuhan.”

Chan also shared that in July, he joined students on trips to Harbin and Hainan, where they witnessed a rocket launch and learned about the nation’s cultural heritage and advances in science outreach.

“These experiences gave me a deeper appreciation for the country’s developmental achievements and broadened my own horizons,” he added.

The chief secretary expressed gratitude to the mentors who have guided students in cultivating a positive outlook and setting future goals.

Chan noted that some alumni have remained engaged through alumni activities and youth committees, assisting in event planning and career development.

He also said he was pleased to learn that several major companies are willing to prioritise hiring these students once they enter the workforce.

Chan encouraged graduates to move forward with confidence and curiosity.

"I hope you carry forward the confidence, vision, and friendships gained from the programme to bravely explore and create colourful stories that belong to you on even broader stages," he said.
