Visitors have lavished high praise on the newly opened section of the East Coast Boardwalk.

With the opening of the 1.1-kilometre eastern section of the boardwalk on Monday, people out for a little recreation can walk or jog from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan in an unbroken stretch in the shadows of the signature cityscape that defines the harbourfront.

One highlight of the eastern section is an experiential glass observatory deck where visitors can peer at what lies beneath their feet.

However, they have to put on shoe covers for safety purposes and to ensure the glass deck continues to provide unblemished views of what goes on under the boardwalk down by the sea.

One of the first to set foot on the eastern section, Dhillon, told RTHK she was very happy with the opening as it gave people, especially those in the immediate neighbourhood, the opportunity to enjoy fresh air along the waterfront.

She found the observatory deck to be similar to one she had been to in Macao.

However, Dhillon said: "In Macao you have to pay so much money. This is free of charge and so many tourists will be attracted to come to North Point and Quarry Bay now."

Katie Chau said the opening of the final kilometre of the boardwalk presented her with a straighter run for her jogs in the neighbourhood.

"I feel really convenient about it because before I have been running and jogging but I have to run... around North Point and it's not really convenient and many construction [has been going on] before," she said.

"So it's really convenient to jog here and I will jog more around this area."

Chau went on to say that she hoped more cycling facilities could be installed in the eastern section, just like on the western section.

Even though there is a pet-friendly area near Tin Chiu Street in North Point, a pet owner, Cheung, said just the boardwalk itself had already left her with a good feeling.

Like with the western section of the boardwalk, the eastern one is also open round the clock, except for the observation deck which is only open from 10am till 6pm.

The deck would also be closed in adverse weather conditions.
