A trade union has opened a dedicated lounge for delivery workers to take a break.

The facility, located at the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions’ vocational training centre in To Kwa Wan, can accommodate parking for around 20 motorbikes.

It offers air-conditioning, WiFi, bottled water and toilets.

Delivery workers told RTHK the lounge would enable them take proper breaks without having to worry about getting a parking ticket.

“We can park for 10 or 15 minutes, so we can go to the restrooms, refill water or buy something. So this would be the best thing for us,” Nita said.

Another food courier, Hassan, which usually handles orders in Tuen Mun, said he hoped similar facilities could be opened across the territory.

“When we don't have an order or we want to get together, we can do it in the lounge,” he said.

Union chairman and lawmaker Lam Chun-sing said finding affordable spaces in crowded areas where most delivery workers operated was very difficult.

He urged the government and businesses to take the initiative further.

“We hope that the Housing Department, housing estates, large enterprises, shopping malls can think more about whether they can establish a rest or parking area for the riders,” Lam said.

The lounge is free of charge and opens from 9am to 10pm.
