Hong Kong celebrated the arrival of its first newborns of 2026 with a boy arriving exactly at midnight on Thursday.

The child, weighing 3.2 kilogrammes, was delivered at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre and is his parents' firstborn.

The hospital extended its wishes for his health and happiness.

Other hospitals saw five more babies within the first hour of the New Year.

The earliest of these was a girl, born at 12.02 am at United Christian Hospital and weighing approximately three kilogrammes.

She was followed just four minutes later by the arrival of a boy at Kwong Wah Hospital, where another girl was born at 12.30 am.

The parents of the Kwong Wah Hospital baby boy shared their joy at welcoming their third child.

"The pregnancy journey was difficult, but I felt very happy when I saw our baby arrive," said the mother, Mrs Wu.

She and her husband have not yet chosen a name and plan to discuss it with their family.

The husband's wishes were for their newborn's good health and for the family to remain united and happy.

The other two births saw the arrival of a girl at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and a boy at Tuen Mun Hospital.
