The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reminded Chinese citizens not to travel to Venezuela for the time being, following the capture of its President, Nicolas Maduro, by the United States.
It said people in the Latin American country should strengthen contingency plans, avoid going out unless absolutely necessary, and stay away from conflict or sensitive areas.
The Security Bureau, meanwhile, has called on people from the SAR who plan to visit Venezuela or are already there to stay vigilant.
It said the country was not on Hong Kong's outbound travel alert list, but officials have included additional information since the US bombing of Caracas.
"Residents who intend to visit the country or are already there should monitor the situation, exercise caution, attend to personal safety and avoid protests and large gathering of people," the bureau's website read.
It added the Immigration Department has not received calls from Hong Kong people seeking help.
The department also immediately sought to understand the situation on the ground through the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, the Chinese Embassy in Venezuela, as well as the SAR's Travel Industry Authority.
It said Hong Kong people who are currently in Venezuela and need help can call its 24-hour hotline, (852) 1868.
