Some residents in the New Territories awoke to a frost-covered landscape on Thursday morning, following an official warning issued the previous afternoon.
The Observatory had alerted the public at around 4.30pm on Wednesday that ground frost was likely to form in the area.
By morning, social media was filled with images and videos from Tai Po and Fanling, showing people scraping ice from car windshields and documenting the delicate white coating on local vegetation.
The Observatory issued another frost warning on Thursday afternoon, warning farmers that ground frost is likely to occur Friday morning inland in the New Territories.
According to the forecaster, a strengthening winter monsoon is bringing fine, dry weather to the coast of Guangdong.
It added that the air became exceptionally dry, with the relative humidity at the Observatory dropping to a mere 18 percent by 2pm, marking the lowest recorded for January since 1984.
While temperatures are predicted to rise slightly over the weekend, the forecaster said mornings will remain cool.
Looking further ahead, Monday is forecast to be windy with periods of sunshine.
