The Development Bureau has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing waterfront development in Kowloon, with several key projects slated for completion within the year.

Writing in her blog on Sunday, Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn noted that over 14 kilometres, or about 70 percent, of Kowloon’s roughly 21 kilometres of developable waterfront is now accessible to the public.

Further enhancing connectivity, she said a fully inclusive 13-kilometre path for pedestrians and cyclists in the Kai Tak Development Area is also moving forward.

Approximately 4.3 kilometres have already opened, including two new 400-metre sections launched on December 30 linking Shing Kai Road Garden with the Kai Tak Sports Park Dining Cove and the GreenWay along the western runway area, improving overall access to the waterfront, Linn said.

She also said among the projects expected to finish this year are a pedestrian walkway connecting the West Kowloon Cultural District to Tai Kok Tsui; a waterfront promenade beside the New Acute Hospital in Kai Tak; and an event and public open space at the Former Hung Hom Railway Freight Yard Pier.

“These projects aim to improve waterfront connectivity and continuously enhance and enrich the overall waterfront experience,” Linn said.

Looking ahead, she said the government aims to extend the length of the promenade on both sides of Victoria Harbour to 34 kilometres by 2028 or earlier, as part of its vision to build an “attractive, vibrant, accessible and sustainable Victoria Harbour waterfront.”

The eastern section of the East Coast Boardwalk opened late last month, allowing for an unbroken run from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan along Hong Kong Island’s 13‑kilometre harbourfront.
