The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) on Thursday expressed concerned over AI chatbot Grok being used to generate indecent or malicious photos and videos.
"This issue has raised concerns in various jurisdictions. The PCPD is also concerned about the matter and is proactively contacting the relevant organisation to understand the situation," it said in a statement.
Grok - which is embedded into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk - has drawn a global outcry and scrutiny for generating highly sexualised deepfake images of people without their consent.
Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked Grok, while the UK's independent online safety watchdog announced an investigation on Monday.
The PCPD reminded the public to use AI safely, especially when providing personal data to AI chatbots to generate content.
It said improper or malicious use of AI chatbots to generate indecent or malicious photos or videos may contravene the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and could also constitute other criminal offences.
